Before Peru
The Foundation of My Understanding
Before traveling to Peru, I viewed sustainability primarily through an environmental lens. I associated it with recycling, reducing waste, and making environmentally conscious choices, but I rarely considered how the fashion industry affects the people who produce our clothing. I paid little attention to where my clothes came from, how they were made, or the cultural traditions behind textile production. This experience showed me that sustainability extends far beyond environmental responsibility.

During the Program
Immersed in Living Tradition
Visiting artisan communities throughout Peru transformed my understanding of sustainable fashion. Watching women weave textiles by hand, learning about natural dyeing techniques, and seeing alpaca fiber processed from start to finish gave me a new appreciation for the craftsmanship behind every garment. Rather than viewing clothing as a disposable product, I began to see it as the result of generations of knowledge, culture, and careful stewardship of natural resources.
Personal Growth
A Shift in Perspective

This experience changed the way I think about both fashion and sustainability. I now recognize that sustainability is not only about protecting the environment, it also involves supporting local communities, preserving cultural traditions, and making thoughtful purchasing decisions. I have become more intentional about the clothing I buy by considering quality, longevity, and the impact my choices have on people and the planet.
Future Goals
Applying These Lessons

The lessons I learned in Peru will continue to influence both my personal and professional life. As I move forward in my career, I hope to promote responsible decision-making by considering environmental, social, and economic impacts together. Personally, I plan to continue supporting sustainable brands, purchasing fewer but higher-quality items, and encouraging others to think more critically about the choices they make as consumers.
