Peruvian Textile Heritage

Discover How Peru's centuries-old textile traditions offer solutions to today's fast fashion industry while promoting environmental stewardship, women's empowerment, and responsible consumption.

Why This Matters

Every year, billions of clothing items are produced and discarded, contributing to pollution, textile waste, and unfair labor practices around the world.

Did you know?

The fashion industry produces approximately 92 million tons of textile waste each year. Peru offers an alternative.

During my study abroad in Peru, I discovered a different approach to fashion—one centered on craftsmanship, community, and sustainability. This website explores what I learned and how these lessons can inspire more responsible consumption both at UGA and beyond.

The Three Spheres

Understanding sustainability requires a holistic approach. We examine the environmental, social, and economic spheres through the lens of the United Nations Sustainable Development Goals, connecting global research to the unique heritage of Andean textile production.

Environmental

Through natural fibers like alpaca wool and plant-based dyes, Peruvian artisans reduce reliance on synthetic materials while protecting local ecosystems. Witnessing these practices firsthand helped me understand that sustainable fashion begins long before a garment reaches a store.

Social

Traditional weaving provides women with meaningful employment, preserves indigenous culture, and strengthens local communities. Meeting these artisans showed me that sustainability is also about empowering people and preserving heritage.

Economic

Supporting artisan cooperatives creates long-term economic opportunities while encouraging consumers to invest in quality products rather than disposable fashion.

Heritage of Craft

I had the opportuntiy to learn weaving techniques directly from local artisans. Experiencing the process firsthand gave me a new appreciation for the skill, patience, and cultural significance behind every handmade textile.
